What is the cost of using & maintaining this cooling device?
Very low cost: the cost of the electricity needed to recharge the battery and run a freezer. Period.
Very low maintenance: only some cleaning from time to time.
How long before the battery needs a recharge or the ice-pack-cartridges a refreeze?
It depends if your use is "continuous" or "with breaks" (as you feel cold enough):
The battery
The fully charged battery can provide 2-2.5 hours of "continuous" fan operation before you need to plug in the charger.
You can double this time with an extra rechargeable battery (170 grams), which can easily connect to the already provided battery.
The 2 cartridges (10 ice packs)
The fully frozen provided cartridges are delivering a powerful "continuous" air cooling and drying for up to 1 hour and more if your garment protects (insulates) you well from outside hot weather. Much more time if you stop and restart the airflow several times when you are cold enough, or less time if you are doing a heat-generating activity like running. Keep in mind that the skin's natural cooling power (using sweat) is also facilitated by the air circulation (unlike for some cooling vests).
And if you wish to instantly extend the cooling time, without waiting for the cartridges to be refrozen, you can buy and keep ready (frozen) an extra pair of cartridges.
Tip 1: Avoid cooling yourself too much, particularly at the beginning, by simply playing with the pull-switch: to stop and start the fan several times. This will extend the cooling time.
Tip 2: Chose an insulated shirt, for example: a sweatshirt rather than a t-shirt, to keep the cold inside andΒ extend the cooling time.
Tip 3: If you prefer moderate cooling only, use 1 cartridge at a time (not both) and keep frozen the second cartridge, ready for immediate cooling time extension when replacing the first one.
Tip 4: Use a thermal bag or cooler (not provided) to carry extra frozen cartridges, to have them on hand if needed.
Can I use this cooling backpack with an abaya or kandura (thobe)?
Yes, but only after you (or your tailor) made a small opening (horizontal rectangle 8.5 cm x 2.5 cm) in your garment at this location: in the back, below the waist and above the belt. To close back this opening when not in use: a ribbon and some hook-and-loop fastener is a simple option. This opening is important for the "Air return" (recycling air from the Waist Air Collector to the Backpack).
Can I use this cooling system with a one-piece construction suit (coverall)?
Same answer as to the previous question: if the protective garment is a one-piece suit, you will need to get the same opening as in previous question. If the construction suit is in two pieces (trouser and vest): this opening is not needed.
